Lasswade 7 – 29 Stewart’s Melville

On Saturday Stew Mel visited Hawthornden where the hosts made us feel most welcome at the pre match lunch with the guest speaker, former Scotland and Lions prop Iain Milne, regaling those in attendance with stories from his Scotland career and his views on the structure of the Scottish club game. Iain remains deeply passionate about his club, Heriot’s, and Scottish club rugby as a whole.

To the game – a win and 5 points are the main positives!

It is also great to see Jamie McGurk and Chris Baikie return to playing rugby after both were out for 2 seasons with serious knee injuries. Even better news is that both are playing very well, with Jamie providing a cutting edge in the centre and Chris bringing a bit of ‘dog’ to the forward pack.

The game itself was not, perhaps, the finest of spectacles but, nonetheless, Stew Mel scored first half tries through Charlie Burrowes and Ewan Stewart with Adam Fraser converting both. That made it Lasswade 0–14 Stew Mel at half time.

Adam chipped over a penalty early in the second half to extend our lead to 17 points before Lasswade replied with a converted try of their own. Around the 65-minute mark, Jamie McGurk embarked on a swerving run which took play up the pitch before he passed to Brodie Miller who duly touched down.

The final try of the day came from Chris Baikie after a neat inside pass from Jack Pennell allowed George Lee to surge deep into the Lasswade 22. George then put Chris away to score under the posts, Adam Fraser converting.

Final score Lasswade 7–29 Stew Mel.

Our next game is at Inverleith against Newton Stewart on Saturday 26th October with a 3 pm kick off. Please let Lindsey Geddes know ASAP if you would like to join us for the pre match lunch.
